Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a sport that encompasses techniques from a variety of different styles, allowing Boxing and Karate strikes, throws and holds from Wrestling and Judo, as well as many other martial art disciplines. It originated as a competition to determine which styles worked better than others and has evolved into a sanctioned and regulated contact sport.
As with most sports, a wide variety of people train in MMA without planning to compete and simply enjoy training for fitness, self defense and discipline. At VT MMA, we have the benefit of many years in Mixed Martial Arts competition experience, so not only will training be run professionally and safely, but we also have the experience to prepare those students who do wish to pursue the competitive side of the sport.
Despite what many might believe, participating in MMA does not depend on your level of physical fitness. Most people have never had any sort of sports coaching, let alone martial arts, so our classes are planned to cater for new students starting from scratch. We currently have a broad spectrum of students at VT MMA, from those with no prior training to seasoned veterans and we are proud to say all our students are very friendly and respectful. We do not believe in "No Pain, No Gain" - training is hard but fun. We only allow hard sparring for those preparing for competition. We also have women in our classes, you don't have to be big and strong, some of our girls weigh only 8st!
For those who are wishing to compete, we fully manage all our fighters. We arrange bouts, help with game plans and coach fight training to your specific needs.
